Unveiling of the Eye and the Needle, St Michael's Square

On Sunday the 28th of February 2010, the artwork which saw the completion of the transformation of the former carpark into the beautiful St Michael's square was unveiled. The Bishop of Wakefield the Right Reverend Stephen Platten carried out the ceremony at 3pm.

The sculpture is the work of award winning sculptor Nicolas Moreton and is a modern interpretation of a market cross. With a cone shaped spire which has cutouts which will allow light to shine through, coming through a circular granite platform, the sculpture wil certainly be a prominent and striking feature in the square. There are words from a Ted Hughes poem inscribed on the edge of the granite platform which, it is hoped, will be used as a performance facility.
